As early as 1989, the European Food Safety Authority's Scientific Committee for Food conducted an assessment and concluded that it was safe to continue using paraffin as a food additive. In 1995, the SCF continued its evaluation and proposed a provisional ADmissible daily intake (ADI) of 0-4mg/kg body weight for paraffin wax. In 2002, the joint expert committee on food additives of the United Nations food and agriculture qualifications and the world health organization (who) conducted a comprehensive assessment of the safety of paraffin and other mineral oils. The assessment concluded that the ADI value of different paraffin products was between 10 and 20mg/kg body weight. In 2009, after comprehensive analysis, the European Food Safety Authority confirmed the safety of paraffin oils with high viscosity and proposed an ADI of 12mg/kg body weight.

In 2012, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reassessed the safety of mineral oils in food and concluded that various petroleum waxes, including paraffin wax and microcrystalline wax, are not acutely toxic or carcinogenic, and the ADI values of paraffin products are generally 0-4mg/kg body weight and 0-20mg/kg body weight. Therefore, a small amount of paraffin consumption does not need to worry about its safety.

In addition, except for infants or people with serious digestive problems, most healthy adults have no adverse consequences when ingesting wax, and the wax doesn't accumulate in the body or stick to the stomach wall, but is quickly excreted in the feces along with other food debris.

Of course, because paraffin products are by-products of petroleum crude oil, there may be other impurities pollution, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH, heavy metals, etc.), therefore, the food industry regulations, wax cup and food used paraffin must be food grade paraffin. But unscrupulous traders often use cheaper industrial waxes, such as paraffin apples, to keep fruit fresh.
