According to the different degree of refining, it can be divided into three kinds: full refined paraffin, semi-refined paraffin and crude paraffin. Each type of wax is divided into different varieties according to the melting point, generally every 2℃, such as 52,54,56,58 and other grades. The oil content of protective wax is high, most of which are used in the manufacture of matches, fiberboard, canvas and so on.

Paraffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons, so it does not have the strict melting point of pure compounds. The MELTING POINT OF PROTECTIVE paraffIN refers to the temperature at which the cooling curve of the melted paraffin sample first appears to stall under specified conditions. All kinds of wax products are required to have good temperature resistance to paraffin wax, that is, do not melt or soften deformation at a specific temperature. A series of different melting points of paraffin wax are required according to the different conditions of use, the regions and seasons of use and the environment of use. Non-crystalline, indefinite melting point, general melting point of 49~51℃. Paraffin wax is divided into food wax, fully refined paraffin wax, semi-refined paraffin wax and soap wax, etc. Each category is divided into 52,54,56,58,60,62,64, according to the melting point.

Solid paraffin

Definition: A common name for solid paraffin mixtures, which can be obtained from waxy fractions of natural or man-made petroleum by means of cold pressing or solvent dewaxing, sweating, etc. It is a white, tasteless waxy solid with a carbon atom number of about 18 ~ 30. It is generally divided into three kinds: fully refined paraffin, semi-refined paraffin and crude paraffin. Paraffin is widely used, the paper immersed in paraffin can be made with good waterproof waxed paper; When paraffin is added to cotton yarn, it can make the textile soft, smooth and elastic.

Chemical properties

In wax chemistry, paraffin is the common name for a mixture of solid ** alkanes, with the molecular formula CnH2n+2, where N =20-40. A mixture of hydrocarbons with a carbon atom number of about 18 ~ 30 is mainly divided into straight-chain alkanes (about 80% ~ 95%), and a small amount of alkanes with individual branch chains and single-ring cycloalkanes with long side chains (the total content of both is below 20%). Paraffin does not react with common chemicals, but it can burn.

Physical properties

Paraffin wax, also known as crystalline wax, is usually a white, colorless, odorless, waxy solid that melts at 47°C to 64°C, with a density of about 0.9g/cm3. It is insoluble in water but soluble in ethers, benzene and some esters. Pure paraffin is a good insulator, with a resistivity of 1013-1017 ohm · m [2], higher than most materials except for some plastics (especially Teflon). Paraffin is also a good heat storage material. Its specific heat capacity is 2.14 -- 2.9J· g-1 · k-1, and its melting heat is 200 -- 220J· g-1. Paraffin wax is the main component of candles.

The important factor affecting the melting point of paraffin is the weight of the selected raw material fraction. The melting point of paraffin removed from the heavier fraction is higher. In addition, the oil content of paraffin also has a great impact on the melting point, the more oil in paraffin, the lower the melting point.
